Let There Be Light, Pt. 1

Rarely is it a pleasant surprise when receiving a phone call, but when our electrician told us that the wiring and testing of the electricity for the first floor was done, it was definitely a nice moment. It was a few months in the making though, and most certainly a learning experience.

For starters, there was a lot of underestimating. Like the fact that the floors needed to all be stripped down to the very base first. And the level of coordination that needed to be done with third party providers for air-conditioning, home security and motorised curtains. And the positioning of sockets to cater for the positioning of furniture.

And the sheer. amount. of piping.

Pictured: A sheer amount of piping.

This is partially attributed to the fact that each floor will have its own separate circuit and distribution box, something that was recommended to us and which we agreed to. This leaves us with a better control system for maintenance and to avoid overloading.

There were of course a few challenges along the way. Given that we wanted to avoid soffits as much as possible, we were limiting ourselves to the available ceiling connections that were already there. Ultimately, we had to compromise for the main bedroom. The intention is to divide it with a partition to create an open wardrobe space, and in doing so, it would have not been possible to just stick to one light in the middle of the room. We will also have to introduce bulkheads to the other bedrooms to cater for the A/Cs, however the impact will be minimal and the high ceilings will still be enjoyed.

There are still some final loose ends to tackle, but will be seen to after tiles and gypsum are laid. In the meantime, the focus shall shift to the bathrooms and the ground floor.
