The Storm Before the Calm: Chapter 2

Weeks went by, not much had changed. The work was still what it was. Getting to work was also what it was. By early 2021 most of the world had started to adapt to the remote working culture due to Covid; in our case we were doing alternating weeks between from home and at the office.  But the traffic - God, there were times where I'd leave home, spend 5 minutes on the road and just turn back and decide I was going to work from home that day, even if it wasn't my turn to. It was still far more productive that way.

Aside from the traffic due to travelling from the south of Malta, there were also... other issues regarding the overall location where we lived. I'm not one to generalise, but when I've resided in various areas across the country I am able to reach my own conclusions and decide that maybe certain places lack the desired potential for raising young children. I don't need my kids developing a colourful vocabulary from hearing the neighbours next door or below us at two o'clock in the morning, every day.

On a broader scale, things weren't looking so hot for Malta as a country either. Overdevelopment was already an old topic, political scandals were the norm and we were on the verge of being greylisted by Financial Action Task Force which would have a direct impact on our jobs. Brain drain was a reality and, quite frankly, I would have told anyone who didn't have kids to get the hell out of here as soon as they can.

Then again, why not if you have kids already? When you weigh the pros and cons, you're looking at a temporary sacrifice for a better life. And so, after agreeing on our criteria and doing our research, we officially decided that we would not remain where we were. We would be seeking new pastures.

In Ireland.
